This month’s PILOTed
is my summary of the 2004 Information Industry Summit.
The most common comment of the summit was that online
content has become a commodity; growth of the information
industry will be in new products and services that combine
content with expertise and technology.
For services that are sold to institutions,
the keys to success will be combining data from numerous
sources into one easy to use tool that directly and
quickly answers questions of busy professionals. It’s
even better if some analysis has been conducted on that
information to help the professionals make better decisions.
For services that are sold to individuals,
successful services will be easy to use, free or inexpensive,
and hold their interest.
Customers and vendors are
all watching the debate as to rights – what should
the customer be allowed to do with the content once
he/she has it and should those rights be controlled.
It was also interesting to note the similarities in
what the companies that successfully rode out the last
two years (see Lessons Learned) say are their keys to
success and the traits that customers say (see How Buyers
Drive) they use in their buying decisions.    Next
